After three studio albums evolving in a progressive rock register with metallic accents, and after the departure of their keyboard player, the Germans of Deafening Opera come back to us in this year 2021 with "Driftwood", an album with the appearance of an EP in a rather different genre from their previous works.

Indeed, "Driftwood" is a rather atypical album, semi-acoustic privileging the acoustic guitar, the piano and the percussions, in which the listener will find notably three tracks from their previous albums restored in purified versions. The instrumental introduction offered by 'Murghab Morning' quickly lays the foundations of the desired atmosphere for these 36 minutes with delicate accents: dry guitar for the melody with some piano notes to conclude, percussions for the rhythmic, while the ambient keyboards will make their only appearance here.

As a result, the band ventures in rather new ways for him, with notably the bouncy and jazzy 'Snowman's Meadow' with false airs of The Tangent and whose doubled vocal parts are particularly tasty. On the other hand, 'Farewell Kiss' and its duet with Alexandra Stovall's female voice sounds like a very fresh pop/rock track, the banjo underlining an unstoppable melodic chorus, which doesn't prevent Deafening Opera from including a mischievous wink in the form of a delicate guitar solo with bluesy tones. As for the covers, '25 000 Miles' unfolds its heady gimmick, while 'As Night and Day Collide' takes a truly intimate turn. On the contrary, 'Man and Machine' offers more contrasted looks, supported all along by the sounds of Fender Rhodes.

A rather unexpected album, "Driftwood" can be savored in one go and avoids the usual traps of the boring-acoustic album, proposing not only new versions of old tracks but also new compositions. Is it a simple test shot dictated by the covidian pandemic or is it a real turn for the band? Answer to the next issue without any doubt.
