The incredible success of Imagine Dragons has never been denied for almost 10 years now. However, like any human, the artists are prey to doubt, to moments of depression that you have to try to hide at all costs. It is a little what lived the leader of the American combo, Dan Reynolds, fervent believer, who almost lose his faith, the one which certainly helps him to face the afflictions of the artistic pressure. The cause is personal, the death of his sister-in-law, which made him face his greatest fear, that of not being in control. It was after an incredible spiritual experience close to shamanism that Dan was finally able to let go and start working on the new album.
Three years after "Origins", "Mercury - Act 1" is released, allowing Imagine Dragons to come back into the light after having gone through a difficult period. If for the listener nothing seems to have changed, bathing in a very sophisticated pop, both accessible and demanding, it is not the same for the band members. From a global point of view, the album seems more spiritual, aerial, introspective, light. As if to exorcise the pain, 'Wrecked', dedicated to Dan's sister-in-law, offers a luminous moment of grace with a sober and angelic chorus. The contribution of Rick Rubin to the production (Beastie Boys, Tom Petty...) brings an undeniable added value, in particular on more electro tracks ('Monday', '#1' with its soul and gospel tint of the most beautiful effect or 'Lonely' with its patina R'n'B).
Among the beautiful surprises that the album offers is 'Giants' with its modulated vocals, some of which border on the screamo, or 'Dull Knives' which goes back to the much more rock roots of Imagine Dragons and in which Dan excels with a voice close to breaking, making it moving. Everything is not perfect ('No Time For Toxic People', anecdotal), but the whole is a varied pop-rock, totally assumed in which we detect a certain sincerity in its catharsis approach which never falls into pathos.
An album in which the band seems to let go in order to free itself from the obligation of control, "Mercury - Act" gains in freedom and variety and constitutes perhaps the synthesis of what Imagine Dragons has built throughout its discography, between indie pop and rock. - Official website
