"Anette Olzon's "Strong" remains a pleasant album of symphonic metal tinged with speed, which would have deserved more personality and density."

Anette Olzon, whose main feat was to replace Tarja in Nightwish and was fired from the Finnish band after two albums, needs no introduction. But her story is not limited to that. She had a past with her band Alyson Avenue, a pop rock project, but she lives her present as a solo singer. After an album, "Shine" in 2014, and a fruitful collaboration with Russell Allen, the Swede releases in this year the well named "Strong".

Strength was needed, especially for the musicians in recent months and therefore for the singer who is dressed in gothic, reminiscent of Evanescence. She is helped in her approach by Magnus Karlsson (Primal Fear, Place Vendôme...). Composed in a particular context, this new album appears much darker than "Shine" was, with aggressive tracks such as 'Bye Bye Bye', 'Sick Of You' or 'Parasite'. We know that we will not bathe in the light.

The atmospheres are heavy with Anette's voice deeper and less playful than usual. There are also growls that unfortunately turn to caricature because there is no interaction between the two styles of vocals, this type of singing intervenes most often at the end of the track without bringing much ('Bye Bye Bye, 'Sick Of You'). The album is not unpleasant but cruelly lacks density due to compositions that are built according to the same structures : full symphonic keyboards ('I Need To Stay'), repetitive riffs ('Sick Of You')...

"Strong" would have deserved more relief and personality from Anette Olzon whose vocal performance shows a lack of intensity, drowned in a much too classical production. If there are some salutary bursts notably on 'Sad Lullaby' or 'Catcher Of My Dreams', the whole remains too clean or even ordinary.

PROGRESSIVE ROCK - This double live is a testimony of the Magma live show before it was cut in its momentum. The warmth and freedom that emanates from "Eskâhl 2020" remains very real.
YES: The Quest (2021)
PROGRESSIVE ROCK - If it appears clearly a tone above its predecessor, "The Quest" rarely gets rid of a kind of sticky languor that the delicacy of the acoustic parts doesn't always manage to get out of the boredom.
