Since 1988, Carcass has been the progenitor of death metal with a grindcore tendency: a music with gore, violence, melody and energy. The English, guided by Bill Steer and Jeff Walker, have refined this style while pushing it to its limits. Eight years after "Surgical Steel", sometimes too simple or rigid, one year after the disappointing "Despicable", they release "Torn Arteries", a kind of return to their roots.
The record is based on powerfull riffs and solitary guitars punctuated with technique and melodic passages. 'The Scythe's Remorseless Swing' could have been written by Iron Maiden as the melody is strong and the harmonized guitars beautiful. The introduction of 'The Devil Rides Out' is also based on a nice melody with oriental colors, then by juxtaposing opposite elements, it contrasts with what the band could offer.
'Flesh Ripping Sonic Torment Limited' is a superb progressive track that takes the musicians to unknown lands. The track starts with a graceful acoustic guitar, continues with a leaden rhythm, offers some accelerations and airy passages in clear guitar. The groovy 'Torn Arteries' could have been on 'Swansong', while 'Wake Up and Smell the Carcass / Caveat Emptor' plays with dissonance, rhythm breaks, in a technical style reminiscent of Coroner.
"Torn Arteries" is a success where Carcass starts a return to the sources. As much as "Despicable" proposed few surprises, with a rage that seemed diluted, as much "Torn Arteries" is a success with its majestic guitars, its variety of rhythms and ambiances and its incursion in the prog. In short, a captivating, efficient and of course always full of rage record. - Official website
