""Mnemosynean" is a pleasant double disc that traces the history and evolution of Katatonia, a metal band that has become emblematic and that will surely delight the Scandinavian quintet's audience."

Katatonia has been part of the Swedish metal scene for 30 years now! For this occasion, the Stockholm natives have reserved a small surprise for their most fervent fans by releasing a double album with a particular format since it retraces the history of the band through a compilation of rare and unreleased tracks.

It is funny to trace the evolution of the band through these three musical decades, because the different periods and influences are really noticeable. 'Displaced' reminds the period of "Night Is The New Day", with heavy sounds for an effective and powerful result. 'Sulfur' seems to come straight out of the "Discouraged Ones" era, with its melancholic gothic tones, where the sound and rhythmic of the time are typical. 'March' reveals a darker and harsher face, accentuating the contrast between the ambiences of this period and the more current influences of the band.

We can also appreciate the evolution of Jonas Renkse's vocals with a voice that is still a bit hesitant and less assertive at the beginning. This evolution is all the more striking on tracks like 'Scarlet Heavens' and its ten minutes, where the voice of the singer seems even unrecognizable, displaying a more fragile tone reminding that of Robert Smith (The Cure).

Many more current and modern tracks are also scattered throughout the two discs. 'Vakaren', a track in Swedish, opens the first part with the electro-atmospheric sounds in which the band has been working for several albums. The excellent 'Second' seems to be a snippet from the sublime 'Dead End Kings', and it's actually surprising that this track was not released on any previous album. There are also a few tracks that are a little bit different like 'Sold Heart', more restrained, and 'Code Against The Code', a peaceful track to end the first part.

Add to the whole some revisited versions of some cult tracks like 'My Twin', 'Idle Blood' or 'In The White' which remind the depth of the band's repertoire and you get a pleasant double disc which will certainly delight Katatonia's public and will allow those who don't know them to discover a nice and talented band!

Excellente rétrospective du groupe. Si on doit en posséder un seul, c'est celui ci. Et certains titres sont remasterisés pour notre plaisir !
