""A Vast Field of Silence" is a beautiful demonstration of mastery in a demanding style, the instrumental post-metal."

Chicago native, Outrun The Sunlight has totally flown under our radar as they release their fourth LP "A Vast Field of Silence". That's because the quintet, founded in 2011 by its two guitarists Cody McCarty and Austin Peters, evolves in a relatively abrupt genre, a totally instrumental post-metal. And as if the task wasn't hard enough, the Chicagoans have imposed an additional one on themselves by producing an album they describe as conceptual, ing a common theme to all the tracks, a sort of "idée fixe" that binds the album together throughout.
On the technical level, the five musicians are very good and deliver a high-flying performance, with guitars more in front than the keyboards, holding the essential of the melodic lines without suffocating the sound space by their omnipresence: with a neat production, the use of the instruments is well balanced and all the sounds are well present ('A Vast Field of Silence'). The rhythmic section ensures with brilliance with notably a remarkable presence of the drums ('Emerald Joy', 'Brindle'). The general atmosphere is not resolutely carried towards the joy, this dark side being not without reminding the Polish of Osada Vida.
The tracks, far from presenting classical structures, evolve by juxtaposition of short themes, without long developed solos, and in that this "segmentary" aspect, perfectly linked, brings the music of Outrun The Sunlight closer to the spirit of jazz ('A Way With Honesty', 'Zero Dimension'). It is intellectually quite stimulating, however the tracks struggle to arouse a real emotion with their extremely worked aspect and a certain linearity of ambiences in spite of an obvious effort to vary the sonorities: only 'Luminous Stillness', an unexpected acoustic break, stands out in the global climate.
With its dark atmospheres and its rigorous side, "A Vast Field of Silence" is probably not an album which will pass in loop on the turntables. On the other hand, the quality of its conception as well as of its execution have largely what to satisfy the amateurs of instrumental music. - Official website
