With a series of must-have albums, the Swedish band Eclipse has managed to become a leader of the hard melodic scene with an FM tendency. "Wired", the band's eighth production, is faced with a formidable challenge, that of being at least as good as "Paradigm".
The change of bass player - welcome to Victor Crusner, brother of the drummer - does not make deviate from the musical style in which these boys are masters: their score is well known and it is respected to the letter. The absence of risk-taking is therefore a small reservation from the outset: the impression of witnessing a repetition of past compositions is present. A reserve reinforced by the feeling that the melodic impacts are here more tenuous than on "Paradigm". Although the desire to press the replay button is always present, it is annoying to notice that it is less frequently solicited. Witness the single 'Saturday Night (Hallelujah)', a track modelled on 'Viva La Victoria' from the previous opus, where riff, rhythm and chorus are assembled to try to make an anthem, to trigger an addiction... The title is pleasant, but certainly not memorable.
However, some tracks deserve a spotlight. 'Bite The Bullet' is the perfect hit, and its break with Gregorian chants reinforces its impact. 'Twilight' and its characteristic Eclipse "oh oh oh oh" is a hymn to joy and its final nod to Beethoven's is timely. 'Poison Inside My Heart', a false ballad with folkloric effluvia, invaded by Def Leppard-like choirs, is a real success. Finally 'Dead Inside', essential bonus track, represents what can be expected from the combo in terms of melody and unstoppable rhythm.
Eclipse doesn't succeed in his bet to offer a jewel as scintillating as the one he gave us two years ago. In spite of their welcome tendency to give free rein to their Thin Lizzy influences this time, they couldn't reproduce the flawlessness of "Paradigm". However, the few beautiful successes that punctuate this "Wired", and the general level of the whole, allow this opus to outperform many productions of this style. - Official website
