Music is made of encounters and the most improbable ones sometimes give brilliant results. Circle Of Mud is a young french band born from the meeting of guitarist Gino Monachello (guitar, lapsteel) and the rising star of blues Flo Bauer (vocals, guitar). They are joined in 2019 by a strong rhythm section with Mathieu Zirn on drums and bassist Franck Bedez.
Their first album which interests us today was released at the end of 2021 and it stirs up the national blues microcosm with its atypical blues/rock, a mixture of a very "roots", almost swampy blues and a touch of modernity. The band ventures into the more traditional side of Louisiana blues on 'Remember' or explores its roots on 'The Fool'. But the quartet also excels in a more modern register with very contemporary tracks such as 'Real Good Man' and 'Native Man' with their thick riffs that remind us of artists with the same modernity of writing like Eric Gales.
It's all about balance in the compositions as well as in the perceptible personality of a Gino with pure talent and subtle guitar touch, as well as in that of his compere with such expressive and modern vocals. The alchemy is immediate and the most rocking tracks such as 'Always Have To Run' or 'Pretty Baby' work wonderfully, as well as the bluesy ballads 'Coming Back' and 'You're My Home' or the heady opening anthem 'Free Me From The Devil'. Special mention to the cover of 'Stayin' Alive' of the Bee Gees whose main riff had hidden all its metallic potential until then, revealed in this delightful adaptation.
Add to this an outstanding technical mastery, a round and powerful production and a quality of writing that the riffs and the solo of 'Momentarily' highlight so well and you get an eponymous album that we can hardly attribute to such a young a band.
