"Although limited by its format, "A Tribute To Led Zeppelin" is nonetheless a true confirmation of Beth Hart's boundless talent."

For anyone interested in Beth Hart's career, the release of an album on which the singer pays tribute to Led Zeppelin is not a surprise. Yet, this project almost never saw the light of day. It was during the recording sessions of "War In My Mind" that producer Rob Cavallo had the idea of this album after hearing Beth Hart improvise on 'Whole Lotta Love'. But his proposal was rejected by the singer who thought that it takes a lot of anger and rage to perform Led Zeppelin songs well. Three years later, "A Tribute To Led Zeppelin" was nevertheless released and it would be an understatement to say that it was worth the wait.
If some have successfully tried to do a tribute album to the British hard rock legend (Great White, Gov't Mule and The Black Crowes in particular), the list of artists who have failed in this exercise is long and we will avoid going into it. But Beth Hart is definitely part of those who seem destined to share Led Zep's music by keeping its spirit and its flame. Surrounded by a dream team and benefiting from David Campbell's superb orchestral arrangements, the singer marks her territory from the beginning of 'Whole Lotta Love' on which she reminds us with power and clarity that it is not for nothing that she was considered as the worthy heiress of Janis Joplin in her early days.
The arrangements and the interpretation are indeed the two most outstanding points of this perfectly rendered tribute. Apart from two medleys on which we will come back, the whole remains very respectful of the originals. However, David Campbell's work succeeds in personalizing this opus, reinforcing the heady, monumental and cinematic approach of 'Kashmir', the power of 'Black Dog' or bringing an additional sweetness to 'The Rain Song'. But all this would not be enough without the XXL performance of a Beth Hart reaching the summits. Her vocals is truly inhabited ('Kashmir'), invested (a funky and groovy 'The Crunge'), euphoric ('Black Dog') or heartbreaking ('No Quarter / Babe I'm Gonna Leave You'). It just seems a little too respectful on 'Stairway To Heaven'. It is true that this title has already been so often covered that it hardly surprises. We will also regret the too brutal sequence within the medley 'Dancing Days / When The Levee Breaks', handicap from which does not suffer a bewitching 'No Quarter / Babe I'm Gonna Leave You'.
Although limited by its format, "A Tribute To Led Zeppelin" is nevertheless a true confirmation of Beth Hart's limitless talent. It remains to be seen what traces this album will leave on this performer with such a raw personality. There is no doubt that the next opus will bring us the answer. In the meantime, many will let themselves be carried away by this fiery and hypnotising tribute. - Official website
