This is a prolific period for the modern progressive metal scene ! This is evidenced by the recent release of Altesia and The Omega Stream, and now Seven Eyed Crow! The last named are even starting to be some of the old hands of the scene, with a 2015 creation date and two albums to their credit.
New year and new project for the french quintet with the release of a new EP, "Icarus", released by M&O Music. The modern aspect of the compositions is highlighted by an impeccable production and a mixing/mastering signed by David Thiers of Secret Place Studio.
The group likes to mix the universes, as the atmospheric rock on the intro of 'Eyes Wide Shut' and its clean guitar on bottom of reverb, and more powerful flights as on the end of 'Weird Boy'. The sense of groove remains at the base of all the tracks of the band, like the intro of the very Karnivool-like 'Until'. The rhythmic section is thus impeccable, with some very good finds like the verses in tapping in the bass of 'Weird Boy'.
The songs are generally composed to be quickly assimilated, with rather catchy choruses carried by Jay's high vocals. The alternative rock influences are very present with, in addition to Karnivool's touch, reminiscences of Incubus ('Visions' in particular) in the way of singing of Jay, but also more globally in the developed melodies.
Seven Eyed Crow likes to try incursions in a more progressive register on the first track ('Eyes Wide Shut', and its 7 minutes) which takes the time to alternate the tonalities and the atmospheres, sometimes in restraint, sometimes in a more explosive way, and with rhythmics with convoluted metrics. This track is certainly the most accomplished and the most successful of the EP.
Four years after the encouraging "Organized Chaos", "Icarus" relaunches Seven Eyed Crow with five new balanced and pleasant tracks which should allow them to tour on local and even international stages. That's all we can wish them. - Official website
