Varius is a young Canadian band, a newcomer that offers a harsh, technical and melodic music. A first EP released in 2019 ("The Great Tribulation") allowed him to be spotted, especially since it was well received. Strengthened by the positive feedback, the band offers a second EP, 'Concordance', a concordance of multiple styles and varied moods.
'Gut Shoveler' surveys very melodic thrash territories where the death voice prints its heavy touch. 'Golden Crown' is a long track that flirts with the progressive, starting with a medieval atmosphere, then adding a heavy guitar where sweet melodies and a nervous voice worthy of Gorefest ("Soul Survivor") are intertwined.
'Lament of Dissonance' brings its share of melodies even if the voice is very shouting and aggressive. The guitar is fluid and full of shimmering harmonies. Finally 'Concordance of the Legionfall' offers a strange and dark symphonism worthy of Septicflesh. After a powerful guitar riff comes a surprising melody that contrasts with the first heaviness.
"Concordance" is a varied EP, which picks from thrash, death, heavy and prog. Well executed and full of spirit, Varius' music is pleasant, even if it would have deserved more character, groove and a better production. Varius has however all the necessary qualities to create a personal, percussive and powerful music. - Official website
