Jonas Lindberg & The Other Side is a band that comes to us from Sweden. After releasing two EPs, "In Secret Pace" (2012) and "The Other Side" (2013), and an album, "Pathfinder" (2016), all of which were critically acclaimed, the band went dormant, its frontman being too busy touring for other artists. This activity being strongly slowed down by Covid, Jonas Lindberg & The Other Side was able to finalize the album he had started in 2017 and which thus appears five years later under the title "Miles From Nowhere".
If the album had to be summed up in one word, "melodious" is certainly the one that would suit it best. Jonas Lindberg & The Other Side works in neo-progressive rock, but the one that doesn't confuse pretty melodies with mawkishness and whose compositions don't follow a hyper-balanced schema but allow themselves a few fantasies. Catchy from the first listening (the gimmick of 'Oceans of Time' might stay in your head for a long time), the tracks swing an often orchestral music with a symphonic tendency, lively, linking with fluidity themes all more elegant than the others. The balance between vocal and instrumental parts is ideal and the soli are equally divided between the guitars (including one performed by Roine Stolt on 'Miles From Nowhere Pt V') and the keyboards.
Knowing how to intelligently renew the ambiences, the band introduces numerous acoustic passages which lighten the whole and allow the listener to refresh his ears before leaving towards a maelstrom of sounds. This is the case of the introductions of 'Little Man' and 'Astral Journey', the first one turning into a track close to Toto while the second one is a rather dreamy instrumental. As for 'Summer Queen', its arpeggio beginning accompanying Jenny Storm's light vocals evokes the memory of a certain Maggie Reilly on Mike Oldfield's most popular tracks.
The only reproach that can really be made to "Miles From Nowhere" is its rather smooth character, counterpart of the melodious qualifier on which this review opened. Fans of strong sensations will perhaps not find there what they want. Nevertheless, with its solid melodies, its diversity and its impeccable execution, "Miles From Nowhere" promises many hours of pleasant listening. - Official website
