Harem Scarem has been silent for two years, so Harry Hess, its singer with a velvet voice, has been able to devote some time to polish the fourth album of First Signal, his side project, with his partner, drummer/keyboardist Daniel Flores (The Murder Of My Sweet, Find Me). The Swedish-Canadian crew offers us this "Closer To The Edge" for the arrival of a very busy spring in releases of the genre.

Launched in 2010, First Signal has been in constant motion since then around its star frontman. Guitarists, bassists, composers and producers are indeed twirling from one album to another. It is not surprising that the first three works of the band were differently appreciated. In spite of Harry Hess' talent, the absence of a team cohesion can be prejudicial. And let's announce it without waiting, the titles of this fourth try will not be among the most successful of his discography. Not that this "Closer To The Edge" is an album to be thrown away, simply, it does not fulfill its mission.

In order to stand out in the small world of melodic hard rock, it is necessary, these last years, to pay an intractable attention to the melodic aspects of the projects. This new work lacks too much impact to stand out from the crowd. Its lack of originality is blatant and the impression of "already heard" is so obvious that it becomes embarrassing. So, apart from the opening track, a 'Don't Let It End' worthy of Harem Scarem's work, 'Show Me The Way' and to a lesser degree, 'Don't Look Away' and 'Mystery' which hold the attention, the rest of the opus goes through one ear to come out the other. It must be said that with three ballads and as many soft mid-tempi, a good part of this eleven tracks would make an insomniac sleepy.

First Signal is one of the first disappointments of this year 2022. Hess still sings as well as ever, but he can't perform miracles on his own. Let's hope that Harem Scarem will release an album without delay that will make us forget this half-failure.
