Dark Funeral can be considered as an old timer in Swedish black metal and has released cult albums such as "The Secrets of the Black Arts" or "Where Shadows Forever Reign". He proposes a music with harsh tones, tinged with melody. Six years after "Where Shadows Forever Reign", the Swedes release "We Are The Apocalypse", a sonic apocalypse without concession from which the melody regularly manages to escape.
Dark Funeral's black metal blossoms on a dark ground scattered with bittersweet notes ('Nosferatu'), it plays with the contrasts between light guitar and martial voice. The band finds a revengeful spirit with the anthem full of rebellion ('We Are The Apocalypse'). As for 'Let The Devil In', the track is punctuated by the percussion of its introduction, then an interlude slips in its meanders, releasing snatches of acoustic guitar.
The melodic aspect is born when 'Leviathan' starts with an acoustic guitar and then develops a varied icy atmosphere. 'A Beast To Praise' also offers its share of racy melodies born from soft guitar lines that escape from the furnace. The contrast between hot and cold, between violence and softness is the strong point of the record.
Dark Funeral offers a beautiful record with two faces: the first one is aggressive, calibrated and typical of the genre; the second one is melodic and fits perfectly in this devastated landscape. From then on, even if violence is the order of the day, it becomes almost carnal in contact with these salutary harmonies. - Official website
