"If "Acoustic Adventures: Volume 1" shows Sonata Arctica's technical talent and the complicity of its members, it struggles to keep the attention captive because of a too great linearity."

After embarking on an acoustic tour, Sonata Arctica had to pack up and go home, just like every other band (Covid lockdown). So he decided to record some of the songs he was originally going to play live and make a two-volume compilation of them. "Acoustic Adventures: Volume 1" was released at the beginning of this year 2022 and covers almost the whole career of the band since only the first opus ("Ecliptica" - 1999) is not represented in the tracklist of these acoustic adventures. Electro-acoustic would be a more accurate term because the quintet doesn't hesitate to regularly plug in the amps, even if they do it in a discreet way ('The Wolves Die Young').

Among the twelve tracks taken from the nine other studio albums of the band, we have some rarities as this 'The Rest Of The Sun Belongs To Me' which opens the program in a bewitching version. Bonus only present on the Japanese version of "Winterheart's Guild" (2003), it represents a certain risk but captivates the attention from the start. Closer to the original of which it respects the melancholy, 'Tonight I Dance Alone' was only released as a bonus on "Stones Grow Her Name" (2012). Among the surprises in the middle of a superbly interpreted set but suffering from a too great feeling of linearity, we will quote the use of a banjo and a Hammond organ on the cheerful version of 'A Little Less Understanding', the theatrical interpretation of Tony Kakko on 'Don't Say A Word' or the technical demonstration of the instrumentalists on 'Wolf & Raven', in particular Henrik Klingenberg of a breathtaking velocity.

However, at the end of the 55 minutes that this opus lasts, the feeling is mixed to say the least. The members of Sonata Arctica are clearly very high level musicians who take an undeniable pleasure to play together but it is quickly difficult to identify what is the real contribution of this album on which the attention struggles to remain captive. It is perhaps not by chance that many bands reduce their acoustic performances during their concerts to three or four tracks. It remains to be hoped that the Finns will find the formula to make the second part of their adventures more captivating.

PROGRESSIVE METAL - Between female vocals and raging growls, technical and progressive death, "Alchemy" is certainly the most accomplished album of Caveat.

PROGRESSIVE ROCK - While keeping his 70's ties, Kaipa offers a good album of modern progressive rock with a neat production.
