Santa Claus is a bit late this year but we can only forgive him when we see what he brought us... Indeed, this sixth album shows that the Swedes haven't forgotten their first love and proves to us that they are indeed a metal band above all!
The album starts very strongly with two pure Prog Metal tracks whose hypnotic jerky riffs are superimposed on other melodic strata and on which Daniel Gildenlöw's inimitable raging phrasing alternates with poignant vocal harmonies of a rare beauty and powerful climbs that end in apotheosis by dizzying solos... After having reassured a part of their audience, Pain of Salvation calms the ardours by offering us a "Cribcaged" starting with babbling... If this title marks less the spirits than its predecessors, it highlights the warmth of Gildenlöw's voice (as if it was really necessary) which reminds us that he's been a father since last May!
Three titles, three jewels in the pure tradition of what the Swedes know how to do best... And to drive the nail in, the Swedes offers us two big surprises with "America" and its chorus which may remind us of "West Side Story" and "Disco Queen" with the beats and the disco chorus as the title indicates... the whole on typical Pain of Salvation's aggressive parts! But let's reassure the fans, they're not competing with an A.C.T. or other Mechanical Poets... No, the Gildenlöw's band enlarges its field of competence very pleasantly and a first assessment brings out an opus less marked by the seal of melancholy, at least in this first part...
For in the second one, all the ingredients that made the success of the Swedes are included, as evidenced by the fabulous opening "Kingdom of Loss", a little gem of darkness in the great tradition of the mythical titles of Pain of Salvation! We will underline the catchy and heady but always hypnotic choruses of "Mrs Modern Mother Mary" and the finale of "Enter Rain" or the monumental breaks of "Idiocraty" that may remind those of "Black Hills".
Scarsick marks a new turning point in Pain of Salvation's discography as much at the men's level with the departure of Kristoffer Gildenlöw and his replacement by ... Daniel Gildenlöw (further consolidating his status of spiritual master of this fabulous band) as at the music level with a return to something more direct, more easily assimilated at first sight and less experimental... In the end, it emerges that each track taken in its individuality has its share of subtleties which are discovered with each listening and which makes it a real jewel.... The year 2007 barely points the tip of its nose that we are already facing a major event: a new offering of Pain of Salvation which already has its place in the pantheon of prog metal albums just like its predecessors! - Official website
