"An album that is anything but flashy, "The Tipping Point" is the work of a band that has nothing left to prove or demonstrate, except to please us."

17 years have passed since the last real discographic work of Tears For Fears whose title ("Everybody Loves a Happy Ending") evoked a happy ending of the story that it was certainly not in a state to offer us. Since 2005, the two companions Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal have sometimes met again for some concerts, reissues or compilation releases, but it is indeed with a new album that the duo starts again in this year 2022.
Based on a personal drama lived by Roland Orzabal, namely his wife's tipping point into alcoholism ("The Tipping Point"), this new production opens with an acoustic voice/guitar duet ('No Small Thing'), before taking up the usual markers of the band's main works.
Thus, several tracks are typical of the band's hit singles, with this characteristic eighth note/double eighth note rhythm which gives an enthusiastic basis to the unstoppable melodies of which the two companions found the key ('The Tipping Point', 'My Demons', 'End of Night'), the whole d with modern sounds and in particular a little electro. If Orzabal's voice is a little less punchy than before, we nevertheless find with pleasure his characteristic accentuations, and both the alternation between the voices of the two companions and their superposition works wonderfully, making the listening totally addictive.
On the opposite of these catchy tracks, Tears for Fears offers us a collection of soothed, even melancholic pieces, in mid-tempo mode highlighting particularly sumptuous arrangements. The osmosis between the two protagonists seems to have been found, and the symphonic pop that ensues acts as a wonderful poultice on the pains of everyday life. As an anecdote, the group even allows itself a strong wink (voluntary or not?) to the 'Brother in Arms' of Dire Straits on the title 'Rivers of Mercy'.
Album that is anything but flashy, "The Tipping Point" is the work of a group which does not have anything more to prove nor to show, if it is not to please itself and us. And in this sense, the objective is completely reached, hoping that the happy ending professed 18 years ago is not for now. - Official website
