"A kind of synthesis of Papa Roach's career, "Ego Trip" goes back to the origins of the band while keeping some aspects a little too smooth which will not please everyone."

Papa Roach, pope of the alternative nu metal, has known a huge ascension since his beginnings around 1993 until the middle of the 2000s, allowing him to build a solid fanbase to sell more than 30 million albums. But if the commercial success is still there, as any band of its age (almost 30 years), it has experienced a decline in quality and inspiration noted by critics and some fans of the beginning, due to an evolution accentuating the pop side in its latest albums.
"Ego Trip" seems to be a kind of synthesis of Papa Roach's career with a return to more direct songs and more punk or even hardcore passages while keeping more accessible tracks. Among the most radical tracks are the opening track, the aptly named 'Kill The Noise', a sort of well-constructed rollercoaster with its shattering chorus and those few screams at the end of the track that revive the beginnings of the band. The hip hop aspects are much more present, in particular in the really dynamic and frankly irresistible hit 'Stand Up'. 'Bloodline' also stands out with its dark and almost oppressive aspect creating a kind of permanent tension. Finally 'Cut The Line' remains an effective track while being in the vein of the more modern phase of the group. It's a pity that apart from these successful tracks, there are only some songs that are a bit too simplistic and lacking in bite to arouse any real interest. It is notably the case for the "duet" with Fever333 ('Swerve') much too wise.
We come out of the listening of this "Ego Trip" on a mixed feeling due to this choice to propose at the same time punchy tracks which go back to the more radical origins (punk, hardcore, hip hop) of Papa Roach and too much classical tracks intended to attract as many people as possible. - Official website
