Fourth delivery of the Canadian singer James Labrie, "Beautiful Shade Of Grey" moves away a little more from the progressive or even simply aggressive shores of his big brother Dream Theater.

Composed with Paul Logue, bass player of Eden's Curse who also plays acoustic guitar here, the album explores the passage of time and the questioning linked to age in a much more intimate and fragile way than usual. This sincerity is represented by the quasi absence of electric moods, the human and personal aspect entering in resonance with the wood of the instruments, sometimes caressed, sometimes mistreated, always respected.

The ballads are light ('Wildflower'), soft and orchestral ('Sunset Ruin'), even bluesy ('Give And Take') to leave the place to riffs which, if they are mainly acoustic, do not prevent from grooving ('Devil In Drag', 'Hit Me Like A Brick').

Here, no long instrumental extrapolations or convoluted compositions, the pieces gain their status of songs thanks to neat and immediately memorable melodies ('SuperNova Girl', that Nuno Bettencourt would not deny during his solo escapades).

But when the guitars decide to let the powder speak, beautiful lyrical and melodic flights appear, from 'Give And Take' and its Hispanic bridge to 'Hit Me Like A Brick' and its electric and electrifying part to finish with a euphoric version of 'Ramble On' of Led Zeppelin.

If the declensions of gray populate the Theater of Dreams, James LaBrie decided to illuminate them with his voice.

DAGOBA: By Night (2022)
INDUSTRIAL METAL - Marked by more electro inspirations, Dagoba innovates without convincing in this "By Night" which should however please the fans of the genre.
MONUMENTS: In Stasis (2022)
METALCORE - With "In Stasis", Monuments still hesitates between djent and metalcore, but asserts a little more its identity thanks to a new impressive singer.
