After the melodic wonder named 'Wanderers' in 2019, the new release of Visions Of Atlantis was more than expected by the fans and by the editorial staff of Music Waves to check if the closeness with the Finns of Nightwish was still there.
This new production is called "Pirates" and starts with 'Pirates Will Return'. This first contact confirms the talent of writing and composition of the group since the title hits the bull's eye from the first measures with a catchy melody and a sense of symphonic staging very present. The intelligent bridge, the twirling solo and the epic choirs will certainly finish convincing the whole audience. After this promising beginning the intensity doesn't come down, on the contrary, with a segue to 'Melancholy Angel', a nice symphonic anthem, bright and very addictive.
The band relies on their strengths that are the mixed vocals of Clementine Delauney and Michele Guaitoli, whose voices match perfectly and give an epic dimension to almost all the tracks, starting with 'Master The Hurricane' that symbolizes the turn that the band takes with this new album. They give a darker turn to their music, ostensibly moving away from the heavy references of the past to assert their personality a little more. Of course, the symphonic and epic phases often continue to remind of Tuomas Holopainen's creations, but the band's own identity is now clearly emerging and their musical signature is now clearer and more assertive. The acoustic bridge is of pure beauty and the choirs carry a melody that is still breathtaking.
Of melody it is still question on the following with 'Clocks' halfway between Nightwish and Amaranthe. Same thing on 'Legion Of The Seas' first single unveiled in March or on 'In Wy Morld' with a more traditional construction. The two softer tracks also bring their share of emotions conveyed by the delicate and hypnotic voice of Clementine, especially on 'Heal The Scars' and its more pop atmosphere. On the whole, the second half of the album marks this real change with the previous creations of the group around a more introspective writing on darker texts and more intense atmospheres.
"Pirates" is a very accomplished album that definitely presents Visions Of Atlantis as one of the most interesting melodic and symphonic metal bands. Very inspired by the world of the sea, the ocean, the inaccessible creeks and the sticky harbours of the collective imagination, "Pirates" proposes very well transcribed atmospheres by an epic and melodic music with an intelligent writing, cleverly sprinkled with symphonic, Celtic and traditional elements. But it is above all an album that triggers an immediate pleasure from the beginning to the end and that will delight the fans of melodic metal and the fans of Nightwish, Amaranthe, Battle Beast or Dynazty. - Official website
