"Objectively, there is nothing to reproach to "Grey Everlasting" in which Deathwhite refines a gothic doom of an icy beauty."

Two years after a nice "Grave Image", Deathwhite signs its return with "Grey Everlasting". We still don't know more about the identity of these three musicians who like to cultivate the mystery but Dan Swanö is still in charge of the mastering, the superb artwork, drips with a melancholy as pale as poetic and the rules of the gothic doom built by Katatonia, Swallow The Sun or Rapture are once again religiously respected. No (bad) surprises then.
Like many bands, the Americans have drawn from the pandemic and the lockdown of society to create a dolorous music that is so dear to us. In the line of its second offering, Deathwhite offers a score of a beautiful purity that flies over these fragile guitar lines, pointillist in their expression of a painful spleen, as well as in this moving clear singing ('Blood And Ruin', heartbreaking), which has nothing to envy to Jonas Renkse (Katatonia).
As such, the shadow of the Swedes soars on this third album, but its authors master their subject so well that we can't really hold them responsible for it. And this is all the more true since the power of gothic doom is measured less by its originality than by its ability to capture sadness, to depict atmospheres numbed by desolation... And to touch the heart of the one who gets lost in its foggy nest. True piece of goldsmith with its sinister keyboards ('So We Forget'), each title resounds like a poignant cry of distress woven by guitars to the allure of beacon piercing the fog ('Quietly, Suddenly', 'Asunder'). One guesses all along the immense work provided by the trio as well in term of writing as of execution to reach a quasi perfect result.
However, if its personality remains easily recognizable, the band discreetly makes its art evolve by pressing on a hardness of line which until now was only surfacing, witness this 'Earthtomb' with its torrential and almost black metal beginning. If this percussive heaviness also plummets a 'White Sleep' that sinks into a mine of inexorability, the delicate vocals end up carrying everything in its tragic wake. Its emotional strength overcomes all resistance, as illustrated by 'Formless', which draws all the tears from the body.
Objectively, there is nothing to reproach to "Grey Everlasting" thanks to which Deathwhite perfects a gothic doom of an icy beauty, fruit of a long tradition that it honors with fidelity and a racy melancholy. Not very original certainly but of an incomparable emotional power. - Official website

Stille Volk, On Thorns I Lay, Tristitia, Legenda, S.U.P, Elend, Yearning...

Quel rapport entre As The Shadows Fall et A Wayfarer's Tears ?

. . ( même musiciens ? ) .
