"Berserker" had changed Amon Amarth's habits, proposing with the help of a new producer a less direct and more progressive record. Although correct, the result had surprised and disconcerted some fans, especially because of a rougher sound. Three years have passed and the Vikings are back with "The Great Heathen Army". Andy Sneap is at the helm for an album evoking the great Danish army that wreaked havoc in England and Europe in the 9th century.

Endowed with a federative cover with the members of the band in front of an army ready to give the assault, the disc gives the impression of a will of a return to the sources. What is striking is the emphasis on a more death metal sound in the first part of the album. Amon Amarth is mean and rough. Johan offers a very guttural vocal that seems to come straight from the underworld. The music is snarling and old school, leaving room for melody only on some soli.

Then, as the album progresses, Amon Amarth spreads its melodic panoply. He finds the tone of albums like "Surtur Rising" or "Deceiver Of The Gods". 'Heidrun', 'Find A Way Or Male One' and 'Skagul Rides With Me' are carved in an efficient melodic mold through heavy riffs and stunning soli. It emerges from them a great epic force, the one which gives desire to go to war, the fist raised, thanks to federative choruses. Finally, the meeting on 'Saxons And Vikings' between Johan the Nordic and Biff Byford (who logically plays the Saxon) gives place to an intense vocal fight on a background of warlike and epic melody giving the shiver.

With "The Great Heaten Army", Amon Amarth finds a more classic sound but avoids the simple repetition. He offers a rich record in the form of a beautiful anthology of his career between raw strength and epic melodies.

MELODIC HARD ROCK - Powerful, melodic and varied, "Automaton" installs Crashdiet on the summits of a genre however crowded but which finds here one of its Masters.
CHILDREN OF THE SÜN: Roots (2022)
HARD ROCK - "Roots" shows that Children Of Sün has passed the stage of the second album with flying colors, delivering a strong rock from another time, between bucolic folk and mellow blues.
