It's already been five years since Jorn Lande offered us brand new material with his solo project. Released between two insipid albums of covers, "Life On Death Road" had nevertheless received a respectful welcome. The Norwegian frontman is back in business today with "Over The Horizon Radar" which can only be awaited with suspicion as the career of the fifty-year-old has known some guilty mistakes.
Tenth opus of this talented man who was, since his beginnings with Ark, considered as one of the best singers of the heavy rock scene, this new effort sees him accompanied by musicians he surrounded himself with previously. Alessandro Del Vecchio, the unavoidable sparring-partner of the Frontiers house is one of them.
The proposed material navigates between melodic hard rock and moderate heavy metal. Let's say it without ambiguity, this 2022 vintage is a good surprise. Getting older, the native of Rjukan seems to have mellowed vocally. This unconditional fan of Ronnie James Dio, to whom he has often been compared as his style is so close to it, leaves aside his occasional aggressive tendencies. The interpretation of the eleven mid-tempi that adorn his new effort gains in emotional intensity.
Although the band doesn't revolutionize its musical niche, many of the tracks on "Over The Horizon Radar" are among the most satisfying that Jorn Lande has released on his own. By favoring welcome melodic intentions and by taking the time to set the moods on compositions that stretch out more than the genre is used to, one thinks of Dio at times while listening to this album, but also of Whitesnake and Masterplan.
Although the album is very homogeneous, some tracks stand out from the whole. Let us note the beginning of 'In The Dirt' which, punctually, reminds the famous 'Edge Of The Blade' of Journey. Let's mention the obvious resemblance with Ark's work on the haunting 'Winds Of Home', and the surprising theme of alien invasion of London told in a 'Dead London' with beautiful melodic lines.
Jorn Lande is back in form with this "Over The Horizon Radar", which is both a surprise and a good news. Not expecting much from the Norwegian, we have here once again the proof that the most improbable revivals can happen and surprisingly put back in the saddle some declining idols. - Official website
