If there is a band who did not get bored during the health crisis, it is The Dead Daisies. After an acoustic EP recorded during the confinement ("The Lockdown Sessions"), the now quartet went straight on with an excellent "Holy Ground" followed by this "Radiance" in 2022. As it is the case for almost every album of the collective created by David Lowy, the line-up underwent again a change with the return of Brian Tichy behind the drums. The drummer knows the house well for having frequented it until 2017, it is not surprising to see him take over from Deen Castronovo after the interlude provided by Tommy Clufetos.
With only ten tracks concentrated on 36 minutes, this new discographic delivery seems to privilege the efficiency, which can be considered as a good sign. Benefiting again from the powerful and massive production of Ben Grosse, the new compositions rarely exceed four minutes without ever going far from it. The impact is therefore immediate, but it is done at the expense of developments that brought an certain richness to the tracks of "Holy Ground". Once noted the wink to The Who on 'Face Your Fear', or to Led Zeppelin's 'Immigrant Song' on 'Born To Fly', there is nothing left but basic riffs and the direct choruses. These last ones are certainly effective but they do not linger in our memories.
This is not to knock an album that many bands would be happy to offer but after the smackdown of its predecessor, "Radiance" would almost seem like a collection of songs not selected for the latter. Fortunately, all this benefits from the always above-average performances of a Glenn Hughes sometimes raging ('Hypnotise Yourself'), hypnotizing ('Radiance'), aerial and ethereal ('Born To Fly') or moving ('Roll On'). On the other hand, Doug Aldrich seems to have concentrated essentially on the riffs and only draws some rare notable soli ('Hypnotise Yourself', 'Kiss The Sun'). In this slightly disappointing set, there are nevertheless the Sabbath-like 'Radiance' and 'Cascade' whose heaviness seems to come straight from Tommy Iommi's six-string. Note that the second one also oscillates towards AC/DC. On their side, the groovy and melodic 'Not Human' and the melancholic 'Roll On' allow this opus to end on a positive note.
Let's be clear: "Radiance" is very far from being a bad album, but by privileging the efficiency with a direct approach and without too many embellishments, this opus does not bear the comparison with its excellent predecessor. It will undoubtedly delight the die-hard fans of The Dead Daisies and its listening will always be a good moment for all the fans of the genre. On the other hand, it won't settle on the top of the discography of the Australian-American-British collective. - Official website
