"Returning to his Blues Rock roots, Tyler Bryant offers a "Shake The Roots" a little too wise to really convince."

We had left Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown on a "Pressure" almost made out of spite during the lockdown. This last album, made "at home" with his partner, confirmed the evolution started since the eponymous album, namely a more modern sound while keeping a very identifiable southern rock base. Thus, "Pressure" sounded at the same time artisanal and contemporary while being relatively successful considering the circumstances.
For this "Shake The Roots", Tyler Bryant decided to come back to his roots, namely Blues Rock. 'Bare Bones' establishes a vintage atmosphere tinged with blues and country with a touch of gospel. The touch of the guitarist remains intact and takes even more amplitude in the very authentic 'Ain't None Watered Down' darker than the title of introduction. But if the "roots" are there, where is the "shake"?
This objective of shaking up the establishment and the codes is slow to come and finally doesn't appear flagrant once the listening is over. Only 'Ghostrider' and 'Self Yourself' seem to contribute to renew a bit the classics of the genre with more rock atmospheres, especially for the first one. This anchoring makes it an anthem by its accelerations and its unstoppable chorus.
Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown master his subject. We undeniably find this old school patina which cradles the group since its beginnings but from which it wanted to emancipate itself since some albums. With titles such as 'Roots', 'Off The Rails' (very ZZ Top), 'Tenesse' or 'Midnight Oil', we bathe here in "classic rock" compositions which, if they do not bring anything new, are remarkably executed and of an effectiveness without fault thanks to the soli always right of the prodigy guitarist and his typical rhythmics.
Conceived as a return to the roots, this "Shake The Roots" half-achieves its goal, sounding vintage, but without sufficiently bringing the jolts that would have allowed to distinguish itself and to have a little more consistency than this first objective. But if you're looking for a Classic Rock album with a contemporary production, don't miss this new album. - Official website
