Idol is a French rock duo composed of Aletheia and Valens. Their universe is based on a aesthetic inspired by Mylène Farmer on 'Libertine', with dark touches in addition. His music is mingled with gothic, industrial points and baroque harmonies. "Allegoria", with its enigmatic and attractive cover, is a trip to the Age of Enlightenment. Will this record catch the ear as much as it catches the eye?
The EP features songs that are overall classic but very well executed. 'Revelation' which starts the EP with a very nice melody is the best example even if it stands out with its nasal vocals and very synthetic drums. The layers of the introduction of 'Titan's Rise' set up an enigmatic atmosphere, nice solitary guitars and simple melodic lines, on a very classical basis. Finally, 'Steline' develops a swaying rhythm where a certain variety is born from the keyboards with baroque touches. On this occasion, the female voice, much more present, composes a nice duet with its male counterpart.
But two titles draw particularly their pin from the game. First of all 'Secur', the most successful track of the EP with its hazy introduction supported by a much more natural drumming and sensual melodies. And 'Extase' which leans towards a hard rock side where the French vocals perfectly match the imagery of the record. Even less melodic, this title is more interesting, because less cold.
With its dark romantic imagery, beautiful costumes and attractive visuals, the band has something to seduce. Unfortunately, because of conventional moments, the record does not totally convince. Certainly, the voice is a trademark as with Aragon, certainly some beautiful melodies are here and there and surely the record is very personal, but it does not compensate its icy aspect, sometimes opaque. Let's wait for the next album to see if the band will manage to erase these small defects to reach ecstasy and thus be a revelation... - Official website
