In spite of their distance from the melodic death that made them famous, In Flames have lost nothing in popularity. Carried by the solid duo Friden / Gelotte, the only masters at the controls, the Swedish band is back with "Foregone". Despite their success, the band had a certain artistic lapse. With "I, The Mask" in 2019, they had regained some colour with a good cocktail of melodic death metal and alternative passages. The new album is expected to confirm this renewed form.

Carried by a visual and a logo evoking their distant past, the album confirms that In Flames have regained their energy. The band's style is fast and efficient, with typical melodic death metal soli and Friden alternating effectively between death and clean vocals. All this is catchy and powerful and takes the listener back many years.

Next to this, In Flames offers more commercial tracks as they like to write for the last few albums. This works with 'Bleeding Out', 'Foregone Pt 2' and 'A Dialogue In b Flat Mirror'. Featuring clean vocals, they take on a modern alternative metal feel with catchy choruses and effective melodic soli and riffs. But it stumbles with 'Pure Light Of Mind' and 'Cynosure', tinged with an alternative pop that lacks soul. Too generic, these tracks struggle to convince and show a band trying too hard to seduce a general audience.

In spite of these little drawbacks, "Foregone" is a pleasant listen. Between power and melody, it's a patchwork of In Flames' sound from the 2000s with a few nods to their golden age of melodic death.
