Like so many other bands, Katatonia fell victim to the pandemic. Released in full lockdown in 2020, "City Burials" could not be defended on stage. The band recovered, was active with long-distance gigs and released a compilation of unreleased material in 2021. Dark and melancholic, "City Burials" showed qualities but was a bit hermetic and lacked the hooks to fully convince. Katatonia is now back with a twelfth album, "Sky Void Of Stars", to finally move forward.

Carried by a splendid light illustration, "Sky Void Of Stars" sees Katatonia becoming more dynamic without changing its deep nature. The guitars and drums take centre stage again with a pleasantly Heavy side ('Austerity', 'Birds'). Jonas' voice is pure and airy and the mix of moods works wonderfully. The melodies are remarkable, as are the catchy choruses with their chilling melancholy.

Katatonia also signs tracks that bring melancholy to the fore. The splendid melodies are soft and airy, deliciously catchy, full of a sadness of rare beauty ('Opaline', 'Sclera'). Jonas's pop-tinged vocals add a spellbinding edge. Even in a quieter register, the guitars take their place with good instrumental passages, the solo part of 'No Beacon To Illuminate Our Fall' standing out with an effective progressive side.

"Sky Void Of Stars" is a total success. Katatonia is powerful, melodic and melancholic, succeeding in combining all his qualities and signs a deep and warm record that magnifies the blackness as few are able to do.

OTHER REVIEWS
YEAH YEAH YEAHS: Cool It Down (2023)
POP - Quite far from what the Yeah Yeah Yeahs got us used to and even if it sounds more like a spontaneous EP than a real album, "Cool It Down" turns out to be an excellent electro pop experimentation.
CREYE: Iii : Weightless (2023)
MELODIC HARD ROCK - Forgetting the shortcomings of the previous album and erasing the imperfections of the first one, Creye offers with this "III: Weightless" a nice gift to the modern melodic hard rock fans.
