The successive confinements were the fertile ground where the creativity of the artists developed, where they could express themselves fully and more freely than ever. This has resulted in numerous releases since mid-2021 and up to today. Out of nowhere, here is the latest effort of the Polish band Restrospective, one of the leaders of the Polish progressive scene, which they have been sharing with Riverside, Votum or Millenium for the last fifteen years.
"Introvert" is an album in the right line of what Retrospective proposes since its beginnings, namely an inventive and melodic progressive articulated around the two very complementary voices of Beata Lagoda and Jakub Roszak. The album starts with 'Log Out', a long track very representative of the whole work with its exciting progressive developments. Beata's piano opens the piece supporting Jakub's expressive voice before each instrument arrives in turn in an epic progressive rise mastered by a remarkable writing. Punctuated by variations of rhythms and languorous melodies, the piece evolves by narrating its plot under enveloping keyboards and crystalline and air guitars reminding the work of Bjorn Riis (Airbag) or Pink Floyd.
Retrospective delivers an album with a remarkable balance, without real risk-taking but in total control of its art. The tracks follow one another, bringing their stone to the edifice, alternating warm pop and progressive rock in a very particular vein. The fans of Quidam, Satellite or Riverside will find here this unique atmosphere that the Polish bands have such an ease to express.
The atmospheres are always tinged with melancholy like on 'Invincible Man' or the poignant 'Self-Control' on which Jakub lets loose in a rough final that we didn't imagine he was able to deliver. On 'Intoxicated Generation', the other epic title of the album, the piano, always present in the compositions of the sextet, contributes to a bewitching atmosphere where the more supported guitars are sublimated by a remarkable rhythm section.
Retrospective offers with "Introvert" an album melodically very successful and confirms its place apart in the modern neo-progressive. The album will support many listenings without any weariness and will seduce the amateurs of polished progressive rock thanks to brilliantly written and intelligently arranged compositions. - Official website
