"Much more varied than its predecessors, "Formentera" confirms Metric's success in this mixture of synth pop, new wave and alternative rock that it masters perfectly."

Already eight albums for Metric, a band led by its singer Emily Haines, that some people could discover with the single 'Combat Baby' on Rock Band 3 or via her participation to the soundtracks of "Twilight 3" and "Scott Pilgrim". Continuing in a very personal style between synth pop, new wave and alternative rock, Metric offers us at the end of 2022 a "Formentera" that lingers on the turpitudes of life following the recent pandemic, a subject particularly fashionable in this period in the musical world.
"Formentera" has the great originality to begin with 'Doomscroller', an improbable and hypnotic title at the limit of psychedelism of more than 10 minutes which makes pass by all the emotions, of the concern to the rage, to finish on a positive note thanks to some crystalline notes of piano and an optimistic final. Emily Haines' vocals is always a great vector of emotions, being by turns serious, luminous and sensual while being careful not to act like a Diva. And this is true for the first third of the album which plays on the contrasts, opposing dark and stripped verses to incandescent choruses ('All Comes Crashing') or to a saving bridge ('What Feels Like Eternity').
The rest of the album offers us tracks with less impact but almost all of them have a little something that brings a renewed interest, whether it is fleeting via a harmony of string instruments (synthetic of course) or consequent like the vocal lines of 'Paths In The Sky' or the very dynamic end of 'I Will Never Settle'. In spite of a very synthetic content, the whole is quite organic thanks to an excellent production and a choice and a quality of the sounds to the keyboards particularly opportune.
Much more varied than its predecessors, "Formentera" is one of those albums that can easily go unnoticed as the content breathes false simplicity and modernity. However, far from the mainstream content that the radios give us, Metric pushes much further its sound and stylistic research. Finally, starting the album with a track such as 'Doomscroller' which marks the spirits was perhaps not a bad idea... - Official website
