Here is the first big release of the year. And against all odds, it's an alternative rock band that delivers it, proving once again that what is most important in music is always the talent of composition, whatever the style. Besides, Empyre's style is not very original. The English band plays a modern rock influenced by the 90s and 2000s, Soundgarden and Alter Bridge in particular. So why is it so difficult to detach oneself from the 10 hits that make up "Relentless", the brilliant third album of the Brits?
As usual, the answer lies in the emotion that emanates from Empyre's music, in the melancholy underlying the intensity of each track, in Henrik Steenholdt's hoarse and gripping voice, in the obvious cohesion between the band members, and in the Englishmen's intention to conquer an international audience by composing anthems with catchy choruses of a formidable efficiency.
By combining the power of the riffs with the delicacy of the melodies ('Relentless', 'Parasites'), Empyre's music literally carries you out, playing on the eclecticism of the ambiences, sometimes atmospheric ('Waking Light'), sometimes purely emotional ('Hit And Run', 'Forget Me') and always tinged with a dull sadness, despite its clear Rock orientation ('Road To Nowhere').
But the most astonishing thing is Empyre's propensity to venture to the frontiers of progressive, making the British band the other side of the Channel cousins of the French band Lizzard. Tracks like 'Silence Screaming' or the magnificent 'Quiet Commotion' can easily be considered as progressive rock, justifying Empyre's recent inclusion in the Kscope catalogue.
This eclecticism and the flawless quality of the compositions make 'Relentless' an intense and captivating album. Empyre succeeded in making a real master stroke and imposes itself as one of the most interesting bands of the current rock scene. To be listened to urgently in order not to miss one of the major revelations of the year. - Official website
