"Starflower", Autumn's Child's fourth album, confirms what we sensed last year with the release of "Zenith": the heir of Last Autumn's Dream has pushed his progenitor into oblivion. However, the resemblance between the two bands is such that it seems relevant to talk about a simple change of name. Since 2004 - except in 2014 and 2019 - Mikael Erlandsson, creator of both bands, has offered his followers a record of one of these two entities every year.
For a long time now, the sixty-year-old has made the AOR his playground. His recipe satisfying his guests, no reason for him to change it. Thus, this 19th album of the two combos reunited looks like its eighteen predecessors. The timid, but perceptible, tendency to harden the music noticed on "Zenith" is here again very present. Moreover, we will note that while remaining centered on melodic compositions, the diversity of the musical ambiences remains. This "Starflower" nests thus between the AOR, the classic hard rock and its melodic cousin, the voice of Erlandsson diffusing nevertheless on each partition a constantly recognizable perfume.
In this linear work in quality - except for a repetitive and not very inspired 'I Can't Get Enough' - some tracks offering some particularities deserve that we linger on them. 'Opera' is one of them. Undeniably inspired by Queen, its title is not the only nod to Mercury's band. Indeed, in a very surprising way, it takes in its heart a part of the solo of 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. '1995', as for it, owes its contagious dynamism to the particularly powerful effluvia which it exhales and which brings us back to the beautiful hours of Cheap Trick. On its side, the ballad 'Love From Tokyo', in which Erlandsson whispers us a "I Still Loving You" which could not be a coincidence, reminds us of the moving 'Still In Love With You' of Thin Lizzy.
Autumn's Child stays on its way with this very peaceful "Starflower" made for the lovers of nice melodies. Nothing new but a serious work for a pleasant music. - Official website
