Mike Tramp releases this year a new album entitled "Songs Of White Lion", featuring, as the title suggests, tracks from his legendary original band. The question then arises as to the value of such an album: is it a lack of inspiration, or is the singer seeking to benefit from the fame of the band that made his name? With Mike Tramp now on at least his third opus featuring White Lion songs, these questions can clearly be asked.
However, they quickly fade away when you listen to the twelve tracks on offer: the artist has managed to strike a delicate balance between rereading and dusting off. Of course, Mike Tramp performs these songs with a lower, less powerful voice, but this brings a warmth and a different tessitura that enhance the interest of the new versions. Added to this is the superb performance of Marcus Nand who, instead of unnecessarily trying to copy Vito Bratta, delivers a respectful, personal and luminous interpretation. Last but not least, even if most of the tracks are very close to the originals, some of them benefit from evolutions that are well worth the listener's attention, and add to the richness of this opus.
These include the reworked introduction to 'Little Fighter', the more mid-tempo version of 'Love Don't Come Easy' and the more FM version of 'Cry For Freedom', which gains in melancholy what it loses in innocence and protest. 'Going Home Tonight' is more direct and slightly more hard rock, while 'All The Fallen Men' is a little less heavy, though still the most nervous track on the album. And then there's this adaptation of 'When The Children Cry', on which the piano replaces the acoustic guitar. The result is particularly moving and sensitive, all the more so as a superb solo enriches this rereading.
Although the discovery of "Songs Of White Lion" began with some reservations, in the end it turned out to be an enthusiastic one, as Mike Tramp and his team have managed to retain the impact of each track while adding sufficiently different hues to enrich them without distorting them. The hits remain unstoppable, but their new versions are complementary, not seeking to replace the originals. Here's a chance to replay these monuments over and over again for those who've known them for decades, and to discover them for those who were unaware of them. - Official website
