Obituary is a historical death metal band like Morbid Angel or Death. The Perez brothers, accompanied by John Tardy, propose a music whose specifications scrupulously follow the death metal played in the nineties. Five years after "Obituary" which was an honest and solid album, the Floridians come back with "Dying Of Everything", reinforced by Terry Butler (Death, Massacre, Six Feets Under) on bass and Kevin Andrew on guitar.
Obituary releases a record that smells like the Death of the origins: heavy rhythms, acid vocals, dissonant riffs, sharp guitar and percussive drums. The album mixes good tracks with more classical and expected songs. The very successful and powerful 'Barely Alive', carried by a tortured guitar in the manner of Morbid Angel, proposes a direct and uncompromising music. 'Dying Of Everything', with its fast rhythm, is a very good track on which a destabilizing screaming vocal cohabits with attractive melodic touches. 'Be Warmed', which refers to 'Cause Of Death', is a heavy and deep track in which the crushing rhythm and the aggressive vocals become distressing and turns out to be an excellent piece with beautiful harmonies.
The rage and power are toned down on the more classic tracks. 'The Wrong Time' is dark, gloomy and unhealthy, with a strong groove, 'War' installs a tension and a palpable anguish but its riff, certainly powerful and racy, has nothing original, and 'Torn Apart' offers beautiful solitary phrasing put on striking riffs.
If the songs of this "Dying Of Everything" are well executed, airy with fine melodic phrases and carried by contagious grooves, there is unfortunately a feeling of déjà vu.
