Gorod is THE ultra-technical reference band for extreme music fans. Each of their albums is an event and a surprise, as they offer music mixing jazz, funk, epic, intimate moments that verges on perfection. "Æthra", his last album, revealed a slight change of direction, moving towards progressive metal that is as modern as it is furious. Will "The Orb", its successor five years later, confirm this evolution?
Gorod wants to offer something more than just low-key technical death metal, no matter how well played. The compositions take on the trappings of modern, slamming progressive metal. This includes a few funky touches when a rhythmic break follows leaden riffs ('Victory'), as well as more superb, haunting clear vocals and less shouted vocals, as on the superb 'Breeding Silence'.
Varied melodies are the essence of the record, whether classic, obvious or more surprising ('Scale of Sorrows'), or even Oriental-inspired, as on the highly successful 'Savitri'. Their impact is underpinned by impeccable technique in the service of emotion and beauty, and limpid, airy arrangements. In the end, the complex riffs and multiple breaks only serve to highlight the gentleness and emotion born of brutality. In this way, the variations and technique of "The Orb", the album's multi-colored centerpiece, serve no other purpose than to showcase a superb, moving solo guitar worthy of Dream Theater for a bluffing moment of progressive metal.
Here it already a must-have record. Technical, melodic and innovative, "The Orb" is a violent, rough explosion where Gorod breaks away from its past, extending its style towards a modern music with dazzling colors. - Official website
