"Klone confirms its place of choice on the atmospheric Rock scene with "Meanwhile", a work of maturity that will lead some to ethereal lands never trodden while leaving others to contemplate the sky."

Who hasn't seen an animal or a character while looking at the clouds in the sky? By the time you take your camera out to capture the moment, this ephemeral figure has usually already mutated into something else, but that's what makes the moment magical. The artwork on the cover of Klone's new album, "Meanwhile", a digital work by Turkish artist Umut Recber, could hardly better symbolise the style of the music it contains.

The turn taken by Klone since "Here Comes The Sun" almost ten years ago, leaving aside the shouted vocals, is so assumed by the band that, as for Opeth, nobody expects a return of the growl in the compositions. The cry of the ferocious beast coming out of the clouds will therefore remain inaudible to the human ear, with the possible exception of a growled 'grow' on the track 'Disobedience' and the words 'walk' and 'now' screamed on 'Within Reach'. However, you can still feel a certain deliberately restrained rage coming through. Is this a sign of maturity, of a dulled ardour or simply the desire to move on? Whatever the motivation, Klone delivers a more atmospheric eighth album and thus anchors itself a little more in its own style.

More atmospheric doesn't necessarily mean soothing and it would be difficult to meditate on the sound of saturated guitars and Yann Ligner's characteristically hoarse voice reminding the listener, from the very first words, that the band has a strong message to convey. Moreover, the singular sound of Matthieu Metzger's saxophone, also at the initiative of the samples and atmospheric layers, brings an undeniable plus to the whole, without which it would lack a little originality.

Throughout "Meanwhile", the band depicts events taking place at the same time in different places. The theme is interesting, especially as it describes the best and worst aspects of humanity. The band itself puts it this way, but everyone will have their own interpretation, because it is absolutely dizzying to imagine all that can happen at the same time in different parts of the world. An Australian gets up in Sydney while a dancer is getting ready for Carnival in Rio. Someone is born in Warsaw while another dies in Kigali. The world is moving forward for the almost 8 billion people on the planet, and meanwhile, everyone is navel-gazing.

The hypnotic melodies of "Meanwhile" follow one another without sounding the same, but the mid-tempo style being the rule throughout the album, one can regret the lack of variety. We can't reproach Klone for doing Klone, but in these post-Covid times where musical production is in full swing, especially in the Rock world, competition is tough to stand out. An essential album perhaps for the band's career, but one that will probably have a hard time staying on top of the pile in the face of the number of musical novelties already released and to be released this year.

THEY GRIEVE: To Which I Bore Witness (2022)
DOOM - Post metal and atmospheric sludge define the identity of They Grieve, a project that has all the usual invariants: sticky despair, raging vocals, heavy ambiences and suffocating tempo...
MEZCLA: Vidas Suspendidas (2022)
DEATH METAL - With its flamenco / death sound, a warm Hispanic blood flows in "Vidas Suspendidas". This is a nugget of rage, pain and sweetness.
