"Dennis Ward comes back to us with Khymera and this "Firestarter" which is too conventional and lacking in catchiness."

Khymera, who hadn't visited us since 2020 and his well-made "Master Of Illusions", is celebrating his 20th anniversary this year with his sixth album, "Firestarter". Founding bassist/composer and producer Dennis Ward turned his back on Pink Cream 69, his other creation, four years ago to join Magnum with the sole responsibility of playing bass. We like to imagine that the frontman has been able to take more time to polish the compositions of his latest project.

The team remains almost the same, with only drummer Pete Newdeck leaving his drums to take care of the backing vocals. If the band is known to fans of AOR and melodic hard rock, the former are better served on this "Firestarter" than the latter. As for those who like to see bands evolve, they can forget this album. That Khymera follows a well-trodden path is its strictest right, but that it goes round in circles is more regrettable, especially if it only offers just correct or bland tracks.

Among the eleven compositions offered, sailing between Harem Scarem/First Signal and Ten, only three of them stand out. First of all, the eponymous track with its synths and its 80's rhythm reminding of the good old days, in which Ward thinks he's Gary Hughes (Ten), 'On The Edge' which could belong to an album of the same band and would have deserved to be used as a model as it's so successful and 'Could Have Been Us', a catchy mid tempo which puts forward Khymera's melodic qualities and which will once again delight those who are stuck in the 80's

In conclusion, it is very likely that you will keep this "Firestarter" for an evening with friends. Even if they don't pay much attention, they'll tell you they've heard it before. There's no doubt that Dennis Ward can do better...
