A new Winger album always takes fans by surprise. While fans have had to wait three to five years between releases since the 2006 reformation and the "IV" album, "Seven" is now presented to us nine long years after "Better Days Comin'". What does this dinosaur of melodic hard rock have in store for us today, the parsimonious author of six records that have, for many of them, left their mark on the world?
Here, the combo reunites its original line-up. Keyboardist Paul Taylor has rejoined the fold, reuniting with former bandmates Kip Winger, Reb Beach (Whitesnake), Rod Morgenstein (Dixie Dregs), and making the acquaintance of Jon Roth (Giant). If the band owes its name to its talented frontman, who in the 80s was Alice Cooper's bassist, it's the guitars that are the queens of this opus. Unbridled throughout the work, which is packed with nuggets of melodic hard rock, they fill the sound space with solid riffs that energize the scores and soli galore. The latter, perfectly integrated into the compositions, don't give the impression of being posed there as an obligatory solitary exercise.
The heavy rock option that the combo chose on their previous work is no longer appropriate. Here, Winger's hard rock is more easy listening, leaning towards Gotthard. Without losing finesse or sophistication, the Americans' scores often flirt with radio waves. Proof of this are the languorous 'Heaven's Falling', 'Tears Of Blood', marked by its queensrÿche-like riff on the bridge, and the heartrending ballad 'Broken Glass', magnified by Kip's vocals. Punctually guided by progressive intentions, the band also knows how to surprise, as on the seven-minute epic and melancholic 'It All Comes Back Around', in turn ethereal and explosive.
The old warrior is in fine fettle. "Seven" is such a complete success that it deserves the distinction of being the Winger's best album. Its distinguished and particularly catchy melodic hard rock is sure to have an impact on many listeners of all kinds, charmed by the seductive voice of the devilish Kip and won over by the strong guitars. What a pleasant surprise! - Official website

Chapeau bas.
