It's been five long years since Kamelot released a new studio album, a long silence for the fans of this power metal reference of the first part of the 2000s who suddenly fell into oblivion. For three albums now, the band has regained a certain lustre, notably thanks to the emancipation of its frontman. Karevik took a while to make Khan forget and his partners to recover from his departure, but the stormy skies of yesteryear have now given way to a less tormented ether.

Guitarist Thomas Youngblood had this to say about the new work: "The Awakening is one of our most diverse albums in years. We've fused elements of progressive, powerful and gothic metal with symphonic and melodic metal". A rather pertinent analysis.

As far as the band is concerned, it is worth noting a change of drummer, the addition of Grammy award-winning cellist Tina Guo and the presence of Melissa Bonny (Ad Infinitum). The former makes a masterful appearance on the theatrically epic 'Opus Of The Night (Ghost Requiem)'. This track, awash with dramatic lyrical choirs and furious, relentless guitar/cello jousting, is a musical rollercoaster. The second appears on the symphonic piece 'New Babylon' in which she alternates, within an oriental atmosphere crossed by devastating riffs, clear vocals and dark growls, supported by the double pedal.

On the podium, we can place the anthemic 'The Great Divide', between power and melodic speed, dazzling and thunderous. 'Bloodmoon' follows it up on the heights, with its rhythmic variations catching the audience and its unstoppable chorus energising the sound space. Finally, there is the symphonic 'Nightsky', elegant and majestic, and the relentless 'The Looking Glass', whose opening cavalcade, inspiring the flights of a transcendent chorus, is a model of its kind.

With this new album, Kamelot offers a more than convincing score. The combo continues its path of resurrection and continues to progress in its musical conceptions. From there to say that "The Awakening" is at the level of the albums that made the success of the Americans, there's only one step that one could not hesitate to take.
