We were hoping for a new album, but for now we'll only get a very short EP. Let's face it, it's very frustrating. Especially since this "Fascination Street Sessions" comes after "Pharos" and "Telemark", which were already intended to make us wait for the follow-up of the excellent "Amr". But the good thing about an artist of Ihsahn's calibre is that, even with only two new original tracks and one cover, he still manages to thrill us, even if it's only thirteen minutes long.
With its remarkable production, 'Fascination Street Sessions' is yet another testament to the Norwegian's unparalleled talent for writing both dark and bright tracks, and for always surrounding himself with the right people to maintain the unique balance that characterises his entire solo discography.
The two new compositions on 'Fascination Street Sessions' reflect this staggering duality. 'The Observer' sees keyboardist Øystein Aadland's clear voice blend perfectly with Ihsahn's growls, making this track with its sharp riffs a real gem of progressive death Metal, in the straight line of an early Opeth. As for the fantastic 'Contorted Monuments', it represents the perfect combination of accessibility and musical exigency, serving a real heavy nugget with an irresistible groove.
As on his two previous EPs, Ihsahn closes this all too short 'Fascination Street Sessions' with a cover song. This time he chooses 'Dom Andrea' by the Swedish band Kent. And once again, in the hands of the Norwegian genius who has the happy idea of removing its electro colour, this track becomes a brilliant and catchy dark pop song, sublimated by the moving voice of Jonas Renske, who escaped from Katatonia for the occasion.
That's it. In only three tracks, Ihsahn shows us once again the extent of his talent. And once again, he leaves us wanting more. Let's hope he hears the fans' plea and finally starts composing a whole album. Because, if he's of the quality of this EP, there's plenty to look forward to. - Official website
