""Death Below" allows August Burns Red to step out of his comfort zone a bit, even if not everything is perfect."

Without really disappointing, the Americans of August Burns Red have been content for a few albums to offer a generic metalcore that is not very memorable, especially with "Guardians" the last one. The arrival of the tenth album, "Death Below", will allow us to see if the band has not started the path of decline.

August Burns Red shakes up its habits by starting and ending with a long piece. Far from the classic single format, 'The Cleansing' and 'Reckoning' alternate intelligently the ambiences, always in a raw force carried by a huge sound with a formidable speed of execution and a snarling vocal. The melody is brought by a pinch of clear vocals and melancholic aerial passages.

'Ancestry' and 'The Abyss' feature Jesse Leach from Killswitch Engage and JT Cavey from Erra. The result is convincing. The titles are powerful by flirting with a snarling and violent death metal, establishing a good dose of tension and rage. As for 'Tightrope', the intervention of Jason Richardson of Born From Osiris on guitar takes the track to technical horizons not far from djent for a breathtaking result.

Unfortunately, next to these successes, the band falls back into its own ways and offers generic tracks cut in a classic metalcore which sound very similar. If the result is correct, it cruelly lacks originality with a scheme already heard many times.

The redemption is partly successful, August Burns Red knew how to do a little violence. But "Death Below" blows hot and cold with still too many facilities, which does not prevent the record from being correct.
