"Steve Lukather is sorely lacking in inspiration on this vey disappointing "Bridges"."

When it comes to legal contracts and copyrights, Toto has become such a gas factory that it's almost impossible for the band to release a new studio album. That doesn't stop the members from enjoying working together. In fact, Steve Lukather has invited them all to take part in the recording of his latest album, "Bridges". Joseph Williams, David Paich, Shannon Forrest, Simon Phillips... all feature prominently on this album, which, in the words of its author, "is the closest thing to Toto that fans will ever get". Was it worth the risk? Nothing could be further from the truth, as it's painful to note that these brilliant musicians, led by Steve Lukather, didn't really go the extra mile when it came to songwriting.

Although "Bridges" is salutary in its eclecticism and benefits from impeccable production, only two tracks really stand out from the crowd: the funky, catchy 'Far From Over' (which Steve composed with his son Trevor) and the atmospheric 'I'll Never Know' with its floydian chorus. As for the rest, the short album sails between FM cheesiness (the unbearable ballad 'All Forevers Must End'), anecdotal A.O.R. ('When I See You Again') and soulless blues ('Take My Love', 'Burning Bridges'). Even 'Someone', with its obvious commercial vocation, misses the mark, trying too hard to draw inspiration from The Police 40 years too late.

But most annoying of all is guitarist Steve Lukather's lack of involvement. He's one of the best in the world, and could take advantage of this status to compose some real soli worthy of his rank. But no, he's content to do the bare minimum, stuck in an ultra-formatted FM pop-rock style devoid of the slightest risk-taking. "Bridges" will do to pass the time on the vacation highway, but will be quickly forgotten by the time the new year rolls around. With such big names at the helm, it's heartbreaking, to say the least.
