Whitesnake guitarist Joel Hoesktra continues the emancipation he began in 2015 with "Diying To Live". Two years after "Running Game", which confirmed his position as a six-stringer capable of carrying a project on his shoulders alone, he persists with his band Joel Hoekstra's 13, offering a third album traditionally considered as a pivotal object.
Gone is tenor Russel Allen on this new production, as Girish Pradhan (The End Machine) takes the microphone this time. Less well known than his fellow travelers already present on the previous work, he nevertheless lives up to their reputation, which is quite an achievement considering the pedigree of the musicians in question (Tony Franklin, Vinny Appice and Derek Sherinian...).
This fine team has chosen as its playground a multi-cultural hard rock, sometimes versed in melodic metal, sometimes in melodious heavy rock, all the while revealing bluesy influences à la Whitesnake. The diversification of this opus makes it a success, as does its flawless interpretation by a frontman with a warm, slightly rocky voice capable of adapting to any situation. Melodic design is a constant feature. Thanks to the guitar-hero, who is not only a master of dynamic riffs and luminous solos, but also a hell of a composer and lover of enticing melodies. It's no surprise that he once found happiness with Night Ranger, and is now having the time of his life with Revolution Saints.
As the album unfolds, listeners will find Deep Purple's organ at war with six-string on the verses of vintage 'Find A Way', and more modern metal on the chorus. He'll find the style of Foreigner on the ballad 'Through The Night' and Whitesnake on 'Over You', its little sister. The White Snake also pays us a visit on the galvanizing 'Don't Have Words', from which some surprising chanted backing vocals emerge, and on the half-Southern/half-bluesy 'You're Right For Me'.
From seductive guitars to addictive melodies, Joel Hoesktra proves with "Crash Of Life" that he's a formidable orchestra leader. Finely accompanied - even in the backing vocals, entrusted to Jeff Scott Soto - and without taking up too much space, he offers us, once again, one hell of an album of melodic hard rock. - Official website
