"Godsticks offers an album that is both homogeneous and varied. Their atypical, original style takes them from groovy metal to subtly ambient alternative progressive rock. Highly recommended."

We're delighted to welcome back Welsh band Godsticks with their fifth album, "This Is What A Winner Looks Like". After the excellent 'Emergence' in 2015 and 'Inescapable' in 2020, the trio, which became a quartet in 2017, officiate in highly personal and original muscular progressive rock.
Right from the introductory 'If I Don't Take it All', we find the enveloping groove of the two guitars at the sound of a catchy mid-tempo in their so recognizable style. The addition of Gavin Bushell on second guitar has enabled the Newport natives to enrich their sound, which gains in roughness on the more metal parts. The excellent 'Throne' and the toolian 'Mayhem' are made of the same alloy with jerky riffs.
However, Godsticks can't be summed up in terms of their most powerful tracks, as they have many more strings to their bow. More restrained tracks such as 'Eliminate And Repair', 'Silent Saw' and 'Lying' show a much more progressive side to the band, who nonetheless retain a very personal musical signature, thanks in particular to Darran Charles' expressive vocals, sometimes very close to those of Jakub Roszak from Retrospective. This is not the only similarity with the Poles, since the two bands share an excellence in songwriting and composition, an obvious taste for bewitching pop/prog atmospheres and an authentic musical signature.
Once again, Godsticks offers a homogeneous and varied album that any progresive Rock fan can only praise. From intoxicating solos to razor-sharp riffs and original, well-crafted atmospheres, the Welshmen's already broad palette has been further enhanced by a notable groove on the more metal parts. Despite their straightforward compositions and contained format (only two tracks reach the 5-minute mark), Godsticks proves that there's no need to dwell on lengthy titles to make good prog, when the talent is there. - Official website
