Just before the release of their eighth album, "Fearless In Love", Australians Voyager gave themselves a worldwide media showcase by taking part in the Eurovision Contest (where they came 9th, not bad at all). How can Australia be present at a European contest? That's another story. Of course, it's not unique to see a metal band in this contest, and the successes of Lordi or, more recently, Italy's Maneskin in 2021 prove that the way is open.
The musical approach is resolutely pop on this new album, starting with the track they performed in front of some 162 million TV viewers, 'Promise'. The melody is extremely effective, the keyboards are present, the backing vocals are easy to remember and hum, but the metal aspects are not neglected, with a djent riff and a rhythm that stands out from the other candidates. The album features a number of similar tracks, such as 'Dreamer', a 'Promise' clone with tampered vocals and electro keyboards, or 'The Lamenting', with its soft, intoxicating melody, and 'Daydream', an anthem made for the radio waves.
But Voyager doesn't abandon its progressive metal roots for much of the album, releasing tracks that would have found their way onto the Perth quintet's previous albums. In fact, the pop elements are integrated into the polymorphous metal that is as recognizable as ever, thanks in particular to Daniel Estrin's distinctive timbre, which has been Voyager's sound identity since the very beginning. Modern jerky riffs abound, but are skilfully mixed with more traditional elements, as on the excellent 'Submarine' or the electro-indus 'Twisted'.
Don't get me wrong, Voyager didn't produce an album for Eurovision, but the constant evolution of their music over the last twenty years has been perfectly aligned with the expectations of the 2023 edition. Admittedly, the electro elements won't appeal to everyone, and neither will the distorted vocal effects, but "Fearless In Love" is a highly accessible album that confirms Voyager as a UFO in the metal landscape. - Official website
