After the Runaways' adventure came to an end, Joan Jett shot to interplanetary fame with her hit 'I Love Rock 'N' Roll', recorded with the Blackhearts and taken from her second album of the same name. She had not deviated from her recipe over the years: big guitars, a raging and sometimes sensual voice and a few slows. So much so, in fact, that it was easy to lose interest in some of her albums, which compensated for their lack of originality and innovation with a devilishly infectious energy.
Her last original album, "Unvarnished", released in 2013 (the most recent, "Changeup", was an acoustic best-of), proved that the Pennsylvania native still had it in her. Joan Jett has opted for the EP format with "Mindsets", a decision that gets straight to the point. From the very first notes, we're drifted away on a punk-rock wave. 'If You Are Blue', the new single, already has the makings of a classic. Time has not impaired Joan Jett's voice, which may be a little deeper, but it's as ferocious and magnetic as ever. She even indulges in a country-influenced mid-tempo, 'Whiskey Goes Good', on which she becomes sensual and adds a little sweetness. The exercise is a success, proving that Joan Jett could happily venture into other genres.
"Mindsets" is a refreshing listen, with Joan Jett and her Blackhearts going straight to the essentials: energetic tunes and charm. An excellent entry point if you wish to venture into the American punk rocker's discography. - Official website
