""The Vertigo Trigger" uses the same ingredients as Cyhra's previous opus, but the result is less successful."

Four years after the excellent "No Halos In Hell", Cyhra returns to us at the end of this scorching summer with "The Vertigo Trigger", his third album. Exfiltrated from Amaranthe, little Jake E continues to run his own ship with his colleagues from In Flames, Kamelot and Hamerfall, offering the kind of easy-listening modern metal that is clearly becoming a trend today. Will the newcomer live up to his predecessor's standards?
Unfortunately not. Yet, Cyhra's music is as muscular as ever, Swedes' scores still contain just as many powerful riffs, the band's commercial intentions have been clear, with radio-friendly scores, but on "The Vertigo Trigger", the melodies are not as catchy as they use to be. The desire to entice the listener with melodically rich trappings is still very much present but the sauce only takes hold on too rare occasions.
Five tracks stand out in this short opus. Of these, 'Ashlight' is in pole position, in spite of its steep break. Equally striking are 'The Voice You Need To Hear', a pretty ballad with a melody reminiscent of Kamelot, and 'Buried Alive', with its soothing, then pounding verses and luminous chorus.
While remaining true to their intentions, Cyhra offers us the same menu as four years ago, but omit the spices that made it so tasty. The combo's die-hard fans may well be content with this, but newcomers may be left wanting more. - Official website
