The French black metal scene is growing. Excellent bands are overflowing everywhere. Deep in the cellars or lurking in the dark, it's teeming with life. In fact, it's often there that the most interesting hordes are sifted out, far from the light. Wycca is one of them.
The vocals of Robin Arkhen, master of the house and solitary soul in charge of everything from writing to execution (with the exception of the drums, hammered out by Jordan Kieffer), possess that harsh grain that delves into the bowels of the night and the demons that accompany it, while an icy blizzard never fails to blow over compositions with bruised relief ('La Valse du Chamane'). But shafts of light do indeed pierce them. There are majestic choruses that make you want to gallop into the mountains with a mead horn in hand ('Saignée des Cendres'), and there are guitar bites bursting with melody ('Nébuleuse des Ames'). This melodic catchiness is no stranger to the man's acerbic technical skills, having played in a number of bands.
But that's not enough to drain the dark, bubbling sap from an offering that maintains its ambivalence, torn as it is between black and white, shadow and light, violence and melody. The very concept that guides Wycca explains this chiaroscuro. Its name refers, of course, to Wiccanism, a blend of witchcraft and ancient beliefs such as shamanism. It would be tempting to position the band in the pagan black sub-genre, but in truth it goes beyond and transcends this simple box, respecting certain invariants (shamanic ambiences, intoxicating choirs) but freeing itself from them with an astonishing blend of sophistication and power as torrential as it is rocky.
"Lumière" marks the birth of a project whose potential has barely been explored, its form at once abrupt and melodic, its substance connected to the ancestral earth in the manner of an inner journey. - Official website
