There's no need to introduce Duff McKagan, bassist with Guns'n Roses, who has long since embarked on a solo and collaborative career featuring a variety of albums. His previous solo album, "Tenderness", was surprisingly acoustic and mid-tempo. It's not a cliché to say that it's a prerogative of the hard rock style to be able to offer ballads with unstoppable melodies. The penultimate album was no exception. That was in 2019. But since then, the pandemic has hit, affecting millions of people and artists, and not sparing the famous musician.
This event has not been without impact for Duff McKagan, whose soul has been touched by this confinement, and who has suffered from anxiety attacks since he was a teenager. To cope, he refocused on his family (his wife and children), who were a great help in keeping him on track. He also clung to what he does best: composing and playing music. "Lighthouse" is the testimony of this period, during which he composed over 60 songs. The title is not chosen by chance, since his loved ones and his music served as a lighthouse "so as not to lose his sanity", he asserted during the album's promotional campaign.
Without losing the link with his previous offering, this new album is more electric, delving into the origins and roots of rock. As a result, "Lighthouse" appears more varied and denser than "Tenderness". The bassist's trademark hard rock verve ('Just Another Shakedown') is back, and will certainly appeal to early Guns'n Roses fans. Duff also strives to maintain that folk-rock, even semi-acoustic country feel, bringing a breath of fresh air ('Forgiveness'), carried along by a dynamic track. Of course, old friends are also present, with Slash adding his talent to 'Hope' and Iggy Pop lending his presence to 'Lighthouse (cover)'.
This new album is the mirror that sincerely reflects Duff McKagan's image as a musician who is sincere in his approach. Emotion is often the order of the day. Despite its rather classical orientation, "Lighthouse" is a pleasant and touching listen. - Official website
