Forty years after its debut, Jag Panzer is still going strong. This warrior of the American power metal scene has never given up, despite a career that never took off. He returns with "The Hallowed", the follow-up to the excellent "The Deviant Chord". Conceptual, the record was preceded by a comic strip in late 2022, evoking a post-apocalyptic world. Logically, the record sounds theatrical and cinematic, and features a mix of metal influences.
We find solid US-style power metal, close to thrash, with a steady rhythm on which Harry pushes his voice into the treble with ease ('Bound As One', 'Stronger Than You Know'). Other warlike, abrupt tracks make you want to go into battle to the sound of powerful, martial, epic vocals ('Prey', 'Onward We Toil').
Several epic, melodic and catchy tracks sound like Dio meets Iced Earth, particularly in the riffs and solos. Power and melody blend effectively, with the vocals exuding emotion. And, as in any adventure film, there's the grand finale ('Last Rites'), a long, beautiful, melancholy track tinged with a Nordic spirit that makes you want to raise your fist. It's the high point of the record, so adventurous does the track feel.
"The Hallowed"'s exciting story, perfectly told and set to music, allows Jag Panzer to outdo themselves and seduce. Here is a band that could well change dimension if its next productions are of this level. - Official website
